I’m trying to understand the domestic politics behind the Marshall Plan, not just what it funded in Europe. Rebuilding former enemies and sending large amounts of aid abroad must have required a convincing case to Congress and the public.
Which arguments mattered most at the time: preventing economic instability, containing Soviet influence, opening markets, or some combination? I’m also curious whether public support was strong from the start or grew as leaders made the case for the plan.
