Why Do Two Pulse Oximeters Give Different Readings on the Same Finger?

I checked my oxygen saturation with two fingertip pulse oximeters one after the other, using the same hand, and got readings several points apart. Neither device showed an error, and my finger felt warm.

How much variation is normal between consumer devices, and can small differences in fit, movement, or measurement timing explain it? I’m trying to understand what pulse oximeter readings can and can’t tell me—not use a home device to diagnose a health problem.
