Why Did Organic Search Sessions Fall After a Redesign When Search Console Clicks Did Not?

After a site redesign, our organic sessions in GA4 dropped noticeably, but Search Console clicks stayed close to their previous level. The pages and search queries look broadly similar, so I’m trying to work out whether this is a tracking change, a reporting difference, or a real decline that the two tools are showing differently.

For anyone who has diagnosed this, what would you compare first? I’m especially interested in changes to consent settings, analytics tagging, redirects, and the way landing pages are recorded.

A redesign can change GA4 tracking without affecting Google Search Console clicks. I’d first check whether the GA4 tag fires correctly on every new template, consent settings, and cross-domain tracking. Then compare landing pages, session attribution, and date ranges before and after launch. If GSC clicks stayed stable, the issue may be analytics measurement rather than an actual organic traffic loss.
