Several planned lunar missions are targeting the Moon’s south pole, where dust, extreme temperature changes, and long periods of darkness could complicate operations. I’m curious about the dust in particular: how much of a threat is it to landers, spacesuits, or equipment that needs to keep working for months?
Are current mission designs mainly focused on keeping dust out of moving parts, or is the bigger concern its effect on visibility and solar power?
