Voters can face a difficult choice when a candidate is popular or influential locally but also faces serious criminal charges. An allegation is not a conviction, and cases can take years to resolve; at the same time, parties decide whom to nominate and what information to make prominent.
What should a party’s responsibility be in these situations? Would fuller explanations of a candidate’s record help voters assess the issue, or should the decision rest entirely with the electorate and the courts?
