If you suspect your Reddit account has been compromised and the attacker changed both your password and email address, standard password reset links will not work.

Immediate Security Steps

Follow these steps to report the breach and secure your account:

  • Check your original email inbox: Search for an email from Reddit notifying you about an email address change. Click the "revert this change" link immediately if available.
  • Submit a Reddit Support Request: Fill out the official Reddit account help form under "Account Problems" > "I think my account has been hacked".
  • Secure connected accounts: Change passwords on Google or Apple accounts if you used single sign-on (SSO) to log into Reddit.

Information Required by Reddit Support

Provide your original username, the original email address attached to the account, and approximate date of account creation to verify ownership.

If someone changed both your Reddit password and the email address, you should still try Reddit's account-recovery process. Reddit's current guidance specifically covers this situation.

1. Check your original email immediately

Search your old/original email inbox for messages from Reddit saying that your email address or password was changed.

If Reddit changed the email address without your permission, Reddit says it sends an email explaining how to change the email back. You'll need to provide the original email address that was on the account before the hack and then reset the password.

Also check:

  • Spam/Junk
  • Trash
  • Promotions/filtered folders
  • Searches for Reddit, reddit.com, or email address changed

2. If the revert email doesn't work, contact Reddit

Use Reddit's official support request:

Reddit — Submit a request

Choose:

Security problems → I think my account has been hacked

Reddit specifically instructs users whose email was changed without permission to use this route if they cannot recover the account themselves. Include your Reddit username and explain what happened.

3. Give Reddit useful ownership information

In your support request, provide information such as:

  • Reddit username
  • Original email address
  • Approximate date you noticed the compromise
  • When you last successfully accessed the account
  • What changed (email, password, username/profile information, etc.)
  • Any Reddit security emails you received

Do not send your password or 2FA codes. Reddit says it will never ask for your password or 2FA codes

4. Secure your original email account

If there's any possibility the hacker accessed your Gmail/Outlook/Yahoo/etc., secure that account before continuing recovery:

  • Change its password.
  • Enable 2FA.
  • Review recent login/activity history.
  • Remove unfamiliar recovery emails, phone numbers, apps, or sessions.
  • Make sure the attacker hasn't created an email forwarding rule.

5. If you used Google or Apple to sign in

If your Reddit account was originally created using Continue with Google or Continue with Apple, try that login method. Reddit says SSO-created accounts can be accessed through the associated Google or Apple account.

Important limitation

Reddit says it may not be able to restore an account if it cannot verify that you are the owner. In particular, Reddit states that it cannot help someone regain access when they have lost access to the email associated with the account and cannot otherwise establish ownership.

So if you still control the original email address, that's very important—check it carefully for Reddit's email-change notification.

Best order:
Original email → Reddit revert link → password reset → Reddit hacked-account support → secure email/Google/Apple account.
