When did the Indian Women’s Cricket Team play their first-ever Test match?

Let's go into history for a bit:

           In 1976 a historic and first ever Test match took place in Bangalore also known as Bengaluru from Oct 31st to Nov 3rd which was the Indian's first step in Women’s International Cricket. The team was led by Shantha Rangaswamy, who showed resilience and pure skill. At that time women’s sports weren’t receiving huge attention or support in India. The players gave a stepping stone to the Women Cricket Team even though they didn’t win the debut test which was part of a six match series. This base step later became one of the increasingly growing areas in Indian sports. What mesmerised nations' attention was the team spirit of young women to take up the bat and ball. 

             Afterwards, Indian women’s cricket team took popularity even from limited test appearances but to global One Day Internationals (ODI) and T20s later on. In 1976, women players like Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana carried the weight and pushed India to one of the most respected teams in women’s cricket today.

            Currently, the Indian Women’s Cricket Team is making huge headlines with their performance in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. Players like Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh stepped up and the team remained unshaken despite the setback like Pratika Rawal’s injury. Cricket star, Sachin Tendulkar said that women’s cricket in India is “on the cusp of its own watershed moment,” reminding us how far the sport has come since the first Test in 1976.
