Smoking can lead to the gradual destruction of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems over years. Smoke contains harmful chemicals that provoke immediate effects such as irritation of the lungs and heart overworking. These poisons trigger progressive havoc and cause severe chronic illness of the breathing and circulatory systems.

Smoking always irritates the airways. It brings about inflammation and continuous coughing. The cleaning hairs (cilia), which are very small hairs present in the lungs, are paralysed. The mucus accumulates and causes chronic bronchitis. The defenses in the lung loosen making the body susceptible to diseases such as pneumonia.

Lung tissue is destroyed by years of smoking. This results in emphysema and greatly affects the process of exchange of oxygen. It also results in COPD. There is difficulty in breathing with shortness of breath all the time. These progressive disorders inhibit the lung functioning at a very high level.

Smoking has a direct adverse effect on the cardiovascular system. It destroys the linings of blood vessels causing arteries to get too hard and narrow. The plaque develops very fast in the arteries. This atherosclerosis is a drastic condition which causes less blood flow in the body. This places a great strain on the heart that has to pump blood much harder.

This damage to the arteries puts one at high risk of heart attack. Obstruction of blood supply to the heart muscle is dangerous to life. Blood also becomes sticky and has tendencies to clot due to smoking. These clots have the ability to restrict the arteries that feed brains inducing a stroke. Both of them most times lead to death or complete disability.

Conclusion:

Smoking causes serious persistent harm to cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It directly gives rise to COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, coronary artery diseases, heart attack and stroke. These conditions result in severe impairment of the quality of life and premature deaths. The adverse impacts are widespread and definitive.
