How does India's G20 presidency reflect its growing influence on the global stage?

India’s G20 presidency in 2023 gave the country a prominent role at a time when major powers were sharply divided. The clearest test came at the New Delhi summit: members agreed on the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, despite disagreements over the war in Ukraine. Reaching consensus showed India could help keep a diverse group talking, though it did not mean every member shared the same position.

India also used the presidency to push issues it had framed as priorities for developing countries. Its Global South agenda focused attention on debt, food and energy security, climate finance, and development. A landmark result was the African Union’s admission as a permanent G20 member, widening the forum’s representation.

The presidency raised India’s profile in other areas too. Leaders endorsed cooperation on digital public infrastructure, an area where India has practical experience, and backed the International Biofuel Alliance, launched during the summit.

These outcomes reflect growing diplomatic reach, not unlimited power. The presidency is temporary, and many G20 commitments depend on what members do afterward. Still, convening leaders, shaping the agenda, and securing agreement on contentious issues gave India a stronger platform in global diplomacy.
