TWITTER’S LEGALITY IN INDIA
Twitter now known as ‘X’, after being ordered by Indian Government to delete multiple accounts and tweets that violated Indian Laws, Twitter commenced a lawsuit against the Government of India, in July’2022. Twitter is arguing that the Indian Laws are very constraining and challenging. Hence, Twitter is legal in India but on some agreed conditions.
- BANNING ORDERS: Accounts, posts and tweets criticizing Narendra Modi has been banned by the orders of Indian Government.
- BLOCKING REQUESTS: Twitter has been requested to block all the contents and accounts containing threats for the employees of Twitter in India.
- STAND AGAINST MANIPULATION: Twitter has suspended all the accounts involved in manipulation and malware.
- GOADING AND VIOLENCE: Twitter has taken severe actions on accounts goading/ provoking and violence among the public.
- RESTRICTIVE INDIAN LAWS: Twitter argued that Indian Laws are too restrictive and challenging to block contents which violates freedom of speech.
Despite being under restrictive Indian Laws, still 25.5 million users managed their twitter accounts and gained 3rd highest position in number of twitter users worldwide as of 2024.
