Many policies and decisions of Jawaharlal Nehru have been a topic of discussion about their benefits for the country or not. Here are some major points on criticism of Nehru’s policy.

Handling of the Kashmir Issue
The decision that is most often frowned upon was Nehru’s to involve the United Nations in the issue of Kashmir in 1947. Instead of allowing the Indian Army to drive the invaders away, he sent the matter to the newly formed United Nations – resulting in the current separated territorial area with Pakistan and the modern-day political fight.

Examining Economic Policies about the Socialist Theory
Nehru could not encourage free enterprise and entrepreneurial skills crucial for economic development, and because of his centralization and autocratic control of state and private industries through the license of permit Raj, the economy did not prosper. His emphasis on import substitution policies reduced foreign investments, which according to critics was partly responsible for low growth rates, inflation, and poverty.

Relations with China and the 1962 War
Due to his desire to have friendly relations with China, and the policy of non-alignment, Nehru failed to see China as an aggressive country that wanted to expand. His poor military planning led to India’s loss in the 1962 Sino-India war and a major setback to India’s security.

Promotion of Dynastic Politics
People criticized Nehru by pointing out that he laid the foundations of dynastic politics by preparing his daughter Indira Gandhi for the leadership of the country. This trend of nepotism and the primacy of family consideration over competence has often been seen as weakening the democratic framework within the Congress party.

Minority Policy and Religious Reservations
Some of the critics have rightly argued that Nehru’s stand on the issue of separate electorates for the Muslims opposed the idea of a Uniform Civil Code has been seen as a tactic to win minorities’ support at the expense of the rest of the country. These policies worsened the inequality of rights in the legal system and weakened social unity.

Neglect of Defense and Security
Another weakness of Nehru was that His commitment to peace led him to neglect important defense issues, ultimately proving detrimental when India was swiftly invaded. His reluctance to establish a strong intelligence-gathering unit and address the rising symptoms of separatism across India further weakened the country’s security system.
