What is the meaning of the word “Jurisprudence” in law? this is one of the most controversial questions in the subject of law which we will answer with the help of different jurists’s conceptions and using their ideas.

Here the word “Jurisprudence” means the ‘Knowledge of Law’ as per the Oxford Dictionary of England and as per the different sources the meaning is different.

In a nut, shul Jurisprudence means the science or the knowledge of the law in the sense it can explain the basic structure of the law instead of giving the external subjects attached to it.

Jeremy Bentham’s Explanation of Jurisprudence

Jeremy Bentham explained the word Jurisprudence as the science of law which focuses on the positive aspect of it. He said that the law is to give the greatest pleasure to the greatest number of people including attaching the theory of Pain and Pleasure with it.

John Austin’s Definition of Jurisprudence

John Austin was a pupil of Jeremy Betham and he was greatly inclined towards the theory of Bentham. Austin said Jusrisprdence is the basic concept in the law using which we can presume why we need the law and what is the purpose of the law in society.

He said that the law is the command of the sovereign and if all do not follow it then there should be a sanction attached as a punishment for the culprit ‘non-follower of law’ 

Holland’s Definition 

Holland said that Jurisprudence is the formal science of law which means that there should always be a sovereign authority that will make the laws and all should follow the same. 

Salmond Definition

Salmond said- jurisprudence is the science of civil law, he has given a different aspect of the word by explaining the different importance. He said that it covers civil law which deals with property and land. He has avoided the international aspect of it and later it comes as the main critique of it.

Look we all agree that the law covers all the important aspects of our life from going to market to flying in an aeroplane and hence it is very necessary to learn how these laws are made and using which ideology these are formed for the welfare of the society.
