There is no single device that can clean up ocean plastic at its source. The most promising work combines prevention on land with targeted collection in waterways and better ways to keep fishing gear and packaging out of the sea.

Stopping plastic before it reaches the ocean

River barriers and floating collection systems are being used to intercept litter before it reaches open water. Projects such as The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptor aim to collect waste in rivers, while harbor and canal devices gather debris in more contained areas. These systems can help with visible floating rubbish, but they need local waste collection and disposal systems to handle what they capture.

Researchers and public agencies are also testing AI-assisted monitoring using cameras, drones and satellite imagery. Better mapping can show where litter accumulates, help crews target cleanup efforts and track whether prevention measures are working.

Addressing fishing gear and small plastics

Lost or discarded nets are particularly damaging because they can continue trapping marine life. Recovery programs, gear-marking systems and recycling schemes for old nets are designed to prevent that “ghost gear” from becoming long-lived ocean debris. Some ports also collect fishing equipment for reuse or recycling instead of leaving crews to dispose of it at sea.

For microplastics, engineers are improving filters for wastewater and washing machines, while researchers are studying how plastic-eating enzymes might break down certain materials. Enzyme treatment is more practical in controlled facilities than in the open ocean; releasing organisms or enzymes into marine ecosystems is not a general cleanup solution.

New materials that break down under specific conditions are another area of research, but “biodegradable” does not necessarily mean a product will quickly disappear in seawater. Preventing unnecessary plastic use and improving collection and recycling remain essential alongside these newer approaches.
