Blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) are changing how financial services can be built and delivered, but they are not simply making banks obsolete. The bigger shift is that some services once handled entirely inside a bank’s systems can now run on shared networks and software.

For customers, that can mean faster cross-border payments, around-the-clock transfers, and new ways to borrow or earn returns through decentralized lending platforms. Blockchain can also support tokenized deposits and other digital representations of money or assets, making transfers and settlement easier to automate.

These changes put pressure on banks to improve payment speed and reduce costs. Some are exploring blockchain-based settlement, digital custody, and bank-issued stablecoins. Others are partnering with fintech companies rather than building every service themselves.

There are real trade-offs. DeFi services may lack the consumer protections and dispute processes people expect from regulated banks. Smart-contract bugs, scams, volatile assets, and unclear rules can put funds at risk. Banks also have obligations around identity checks, financial crime, and capital that permissionless platforms may not handle in the same way.

So far, the most likely outcome is a mixed financial system: banks remain important for deposits, credit, compliance, and customer support, while blockchain tools reshape how particular transactions and products work. How much that balance changes will depend on regulation, reliability, and whether customers find the newer services useful enough to trust.
