Blockchain can give suppliers, carriers, manufacturers, and retailers a shared record of a product’s journey. Instead of each company keeping separate records that are difficult to reconcile, participants can add agreed-upon events to a shared, time-stamped ledger.

For example, a shipment might have records for when goods left a farm, passed through a warehouse, cleared customs, and arrived at a retailer. Those records can help businesses trace product origin and custody, check supplier certifications, and investigate delays or recalls. In food and pharmaceutical supply chains, temperature-controlled shipments can also be recorded so that handling conditions are easier to review.

The transparency has limits: blockchain can make submitted records harder to alter, but it cannot guarantee that the original information was true. Companies still need reliable data collection, clear rules about who can view or add records, and systems that work across organizations. It is most useful when supply-chain partners agree to share accurate information and have a practical reason to do so.
