How is social media influencing youth culture?
1 Answer
Social media has become one of the places where young people discover what is popular, share their interests, and shape how they present themselves. A song, phrase, style, or cause can spread quickly through short-form video trends, while creators and peers influence what feels current.
It also helps young people find online communities around shared interests—including interests they may not encounter locally. Those spaces can offer friendship, creative inspiration, and a way to discuss identity or take part in digital activism among young people.
The influence is not all positive. Constantly seeing curated posts can intensify social comparison and self-image concerns, and algorithm-driven content feeds may keep serving the same ideas or pressures. Still, young people are not simply passive audiences: they remix trends, question what they see, and use platforms in ways that reflect their own communities and values.
