What's the latest breakthrough in renewable energy sources?

There isn’t one clear winner for “latest,” since records and pilot projects change quickly. A standout recent advance is perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. Researchers stack a thin perovskite layer on a conventional silicon cell so the two materials capture different parts of sunlight. Lab versions have passed 34% efficiency, a notable step beyond what standard silicon cells can achieve on their own.

The catch is that a lab record is not the same as an affordable, durable panel on a rooftop. Manufacturers still need to prove that tandem cells can be produced at scale and withstand years of heat, moisture, and sunlight. Early commercial products are emerging, but widespread adoption will take time.

Other promising areas include enhanced geothermal systems, which aim to produce power in more locations, and better long-duration storage for balancing wind and solar. For solar, though, tandem cells are one of the clearest recent advances to watch.
