A car Anti - lock Braking System ( ABS) is a safety feature designed to prevent the wheels from locking up during braking , thereby helping the driver maintain control of the vehicle during emergency stops or slippery conditions .ABS  works by modulating the brake pressure to each wheel independently , allowing the wheel independently , allowing the continue rotating while braking , which helps prevent skidding and loss of steering control . This system enhances overall vehicle stability and reduce the risk of accidents during  sudden stops or adverse road conditions .

The ABS system , or Anti - lock Braking System , is a safety feature in vehicles that prevents the wheels from locking up during braking , helping maintain steering control and preventing skidding .

It achieves this by modulating brake pressure to each wheel independently based on wheel speed sensors .
