What is a tsunami?

A tsunami is a formidable natural disaster characterized by a series of massive ocean waves, typically originating from a sudden disturbance on the ocean floor. While their height in deep water is usually quite modest, they grow in stature as they approach shallower coastal regions due to the shoaling effect. As they reach shorelines, tsunami waves can rise into towering walls of water, causing extensive flooding and destruction when they make landfall.
