The headquarter of SAARC is located in Kathmandu, Nepal, since 1987. The secretariat of SAARC was inaugurated by the king of Nepal, Late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah.

The associated members of SAARC are Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, and India. The association is named as ‘South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation’. All these 8 South Asian Countries founded the SAARC Organization in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on December 8, 1985. Later, Myanmar applied for joining the SAARC Organization for its membership whereas, Russia, Turkey, and South Africa have applied for the observer status of this organization. At present, China, Australia, Iran, Japan, Mauritius, Myanmar, South Korea, United States of America, and the European Union are the observing bodies of SAARC Organization.

Since, January 16, 1987, Kathmandu the Capital city of Nepal, is the hosting city and the headquarters of SAARC Organization. Under SAARC, there are 6 Apex Bodies and 17 other Small Bodies. The 6 Apex Bodies of SAARC are namely, South Asia Foundation (SAF), SAARC Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI), South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARCLAW), South Asia Initiative to End Violence Against Children (SAIEVAC), Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL), and South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA).
The SAARC summit is under the Council of Ministers. The council includes Foreign Minister of each Member Country. These Ministers are held responsible for formulating policies, tracking the progress, as well as introducing new areas of cooperation. Usually, the meeting of SAARC held twice in a year.
