Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), will take over as Governor of Norway's central bank at the end of the year. The nomination arrives at a time when relations among the West and Russia are at an all-time high. Western nations are concerned that Moscow has intentions to attack Ukraine, which wants to join the NATO alliance.
Jens Stoltenberg is a Norwegian politician who has served as NATO's 13th Secretary-General since 2014. He was the 34th Prime Minister of Norway, serving from 2000 to 2001 and again from 2005 to 2013. He is an associate of the Labour Party.
Stoltenberg was born in Oslo and attended the University of Oslo before embarking on a career in media and administration. Stoltenberg was honored with the United Nations Foundation's Champion of Global Change Award in 2011 for his remarkable efforts toward fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals and introducing new solutions to global challenges. His tenure as NATO Secretary-General was extended for another two years in 2019, and he will continue to head the organization until 2022.
It was reported in December 2021 that he is running for governor of Norges Bank. He was formally named the incoming governor of Norges Bank on February 4, 2022.
