Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi would launch the Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations through video conferencing on February 4, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The day commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 'Chauri Chaura' event, a watershed moment in the nation's struggle for independence.
Saluting the valiant martyrs, the Prime Minister stated that the sacrifice made at Chauri-Chaura provided the country's independence movement a new direction. He stated that the tragedy that occurred at Chauri Chaura a hundred years ago was more than just an arson incident, but that the lesson of Chauri Chaura was far broader. What conditions led to the arson, and what the causes were, are equally essential. He stated that the great fight of Chauri Chaura in our national past is finally being accorded appropriate attention. He stated that from today, together with Chauri-Chaura, every hamlet would commemorate the heroic sacrifices made in the activities that will take place throughout the year.
He believes that hosting such a celebration during the country's 75th year of independence would make it much more meaningful. He bemoaned the paucity of debate regarding the Chauri-Chaura martyr. He stated that while the martyrs may not have appeared significantly in history, their blood shed for liberty is undeniably on the countries wealth.
