India rose two places to 135th out of 163rd. Iceland becomes the globe's most tranquil nation, a distinction it has maintained since 2008. Afghanistan is arguably the least stable nation for the 4th time in a row, after Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, and Iraq.

The GPI, created by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), is the country's primary measure of global stability. This study presents the vastest data-driven evaluation of peace movements, economic worth, and how to promote friendly communities.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) encompasses 99.7 percent of the world's population and assesses the condition of peace across 3 domains:
  •  the degree of Societal Safety and Security,
  •  the breadth of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict,
  •  and the degree of Militarisation.

This is the 9th decline in peace in the previous 13 years, with 87 nations improving and 73 declinings; nonetheless, the drop in rating is the 2nd lowest in the index's existence. The GPI for 2021 vividly portrays which the hostilities and crises of the previous decade have begun to fade, only to be replaced by a new wave of anxiety and instability as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic and escalating tensions between several of the major nations.
