India ranks 141 among 163 countries, as per the Global Peace Index of 2019. However, India has slipped by 5 positions from its previous ranking in Global Peace Index.

Iceland remains at the top place since 2008, as per the report made public by the Global Peace Index. The rankings were given on keeping in mind some important points and that are, ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society, and the degree of militarization in all the 163 countries and their territories by taking into account the 23 indicators take into consideration.

Along with Iceland, the other countries joined at the top of the index are New Zealand, Austria, Portugal, and Denmark. Whereas, Bhutan has recorded the maximum improvement from any other country and made into the top 20, by rising 43 places in the last 12 years.

It has been the 13th edition of the annual report of the Global Peace Index Association. The Association also showed that the "average level of global peacefulness improved for the first time in the last five years". Despite all these improvements, the world remains considerably less peaceful now than it was a decade ago, with having the average level of peacefulness declined by nearly four percent since 2008.

Overall, 86 countries have improved their score while 76 deteriorated, as per the 2019 report of Global Peace Index. In addition to this, India and Pakistan had the highest rating at 5 in the score for the internal conflicts fought between the two countries. Along with this United States, China, India, Russia, and Saudi Arabia are the countries with maximum expenditure over Military and Military Weapons.

The Global Peace Index was released by the Australian Institute for Economics & Peace. Initially, the Global Peace Index was founded by “Steve Killelea” a Philanthropist and Technology Entrepreneur from Australia. Under the report, about 99.7 percent of the world’s population is covered and uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from the highly secured, dependable, and respected sources in order to compile the final index report of countries.
