Overview
Sriharikota Island is the only Island in India where the Indian Space Research Organisation set up a launch Pad to launch the Satellite in Space. This Spaceport of India is the lead center of the Indian Space Research Organisation, Department of Space (DOS), the Government of India. The center provides a world-class base launch infrastructure for the national and international Satellite for the purpose of communication, locating, multiple launching systems, and the research satellite of scientific reason. These all unique qualities of this Space launch Spaceport is best among the world launch system.
The name of this Space center is Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC) it was named so on 5 September 2002. Earlier it was named the SHAR Sriharikota Range behind the naming of Satish Dhawan Space Center is on the name of Prof. Satish Dhawan, was the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

History of this Spaceport
The genesis of the SDSC Shar can be traced to the 1960s. The main responsible person for the creation was Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, he contributed a lot to the development of Space Technology and envisaged that “we must be the second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problem of men and society”. Due to its aloneness and being far away from the populated area in the eastern region, it was the best place for the launch system. It was chosen for the Rocket launch Station of our country in 1969 but, it comes as an operational on 9 October 1971, with the first flight of Rohini- 125.

Physical Specification
It covers an area of about 43,360 acres and in Km, it is 175 sq. Km. having a coastline of 50 Km. The nearest river is the Pulicat lake and the road beside the lake will take one to the Sriharikota and the main road will join the Kolkata National Highway (NH-5).
