The present and became the 25th Governor of Reserve Bank of India is “Shaktikanta Das”. He succeeded Urjit Patel, who resigned before completing his tenure due to some personal reasons and tensions between the Government and RBI over issues related to Governance and Autonomy of the Central Bank.

Who is the Governor of Reserve Bank of India at present?

Earlier, Mr. Das was the Secretary for Finance and is appointed as the RBI Governor for a period of three years only. He was also the member of the 15th Finance Commission of India, and Indian Governments representative to G20 Summit. In last five years, he became the first Bureaucrat to head the Reserve Bank of India. From 2015 to 2017, he has been the Economic Affairs Secretary and worked closely with the Central Bank.
As an Economic Affair Secretary, he was the key person behind the planning and the execution of the drive of Demonetization in India. He was solely responsible for the exercising note ban meticulously. However, due to his previous records, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley addressed him as the right credential to be appointed as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India.
Shaktikanta Das is an IAS Officer of 1980 batch from the Tamil Nadu Cadre. He served in various capacities for India and Tamil Nadu Governments, including as Secretary for Economic Affairs, Revenue, and Fertilizers. He is been considered as the most prominent bureaucrat who served under both NDA and UPA Government. As an RBI Governor, he took the charge when the tension is at the peak between the Central Government and the RBI over issues of autonomy of the Central Banks.
It is expected that handling all the disputes between the Central Government and the RBI will be easy for him because he is a bureaucrat and has handled all these situations earlier as well. He knows very well how to maintain a balance between work and Government orders.
