It is also responsible for overseeing airport structures, air navigation operations, and aircraft freight and passenger operations. The Aircraft Act of 1934, the Aircraft Rules of 1937, and the Commission of Railway Safety are all administered by the ministry.

Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia is the Minister of Civil Aviation in India. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha, where he represents the state of Madhya Pradesh. He was a member of the Lok Sabha who represented the Guna seat in Madhya Pradesh till he was defeated in the Indian general election in 2019. He is currently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Partyand was previously a member of the Indian National Congress. Scindia served in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's cabinet from October 2012 to May 2014 as a Minister of State with independent responsibility for multiple ministries as a member of the INC. He broke all links with Congress in March 2020 and joined the BJP. Scindia is the grandson of the final king of the princely state of Gwalior during the British Raj in India, Madhavrao Scindia, and the son of the late Indian politician Madhavrao Scindia.
