The Bansagar Dam was built on “Sone River” in Madhya Pradesh. Banasagar Dam is the multipurpose river valley project which is situated in the Ganga Basin.
The Bansagar Dam was built to fulfill the purpose of Irrigation and the production of electricity as well. The dam was built near the ‘Deolond’ village in the Shahdol District. The covered the irrigational area of about 2,490 Km2 in Madhya Pradesh, the 1,500 Km2 area in Uttar Pradesh, and about 940 Km2 area in Bihar. All these three states share the amount of water is, 2.5 Km3 in Madhya Pradesh, 1.2 Km3 in Uttar Pradesh, and 1.2 Km3 in Bihar. In addition to this, the dam also provides 425 MW of Power generation in Madhya Pradesh.
The dam started its production on September 25, 2006, whereas, the construction of the dam started on May 14, 1978. The maximum height of the dam is 67 meters, and the length of the dam in 1020 meters. The construction of dam submerged 336 villages, in which 79 villages were fully submerged and 257 villages were partially submerged. Overall it covers about 587.54 Km2 of the submerged area.
The foundation of the dam was laid by the late Prime Minister Morarji Desai. And the dam was dedicated to the Nation on September 25, 2006, by the former late Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The final estimated cost of the dam was Rs. 1054.96 Crores in 1998. The expenditure over the dam was shared between all the three states in 2:1:1 ratio in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar respectively. Likewise, the 4 Million-Acre-feet water is also shared among these states in the same ratio, as per the agreement between these states in 1973.
