The Rajya Sabha has supported the Dam Safety Bill, 2019. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, stated that the Bill was not designed to infringe on the states' rights to their waterways, dam management or maintenance, or even commodities such as power.
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is a Rajasthan-born Indian politician who presently serves as a Union Cabinet Minister in the Ministry of Jal Shakti. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who represents Jodhpur in the Lok Sabha. He was born into a Rajput family in Mahroli Village, Shrimadhopur Tehsil, Sikar District, Rajasthan, India. Shankar Singh Shekhawat, his father, was a top government official in the general health ministry who traveled frequently around the state, therefore Shekhawat attended numerous different schools.
Before entering electoral politics, Shekhawat held numerous positions in various forums and organizations, including co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, the Sangh Parivar's economic wing, and General Secretary of Seema Jan Kalyan Samiti, a group devoted to reinforcing national security through the development of border towns and villages. As General Secretary, he was essential in establishing a second line of defense comprised of citizens living close to the Rajasthan border. He also played a role in expanding the reach of civil defense by establishing 40 schools and 4 hostels along the Indo-Pak border.
