Every six weeks, Google releases a major new version of Chrome, as well as security patches. Chrome downloads full or partial in most cases, but it does not reset the browser to activate them. Here's how to search for and install updates right now.

Even though Google Chrome collects and prepares changes in the background, you must refresh your device to finish the update. Because some users leave Chrome open for days, if not weeks, the upgrade may be sitting there ready to install, putting your machine at risk.

Hit the three-dot menu symbol in the upper corner of Chrome on Windows, Mac, or Linux, drag your mouse pointer over 'Help,' and choose 'About Google Chrome.' You may simply type chrome:/settings/help and click Enter in Chrome's browser box.

As long as you view The Google Chrometab, Chrome will check for updates and download them. Given how long the release has been available, the menu symbol will change to an upward arrow and one of three distinct colors if Chrome has already received and is awaiting an update to install:

  • Green: For the past two days, an update has been released.
  • Orange: For the past four days, an update has been accessible.
  • Red: For the past seven days, an update has been accessible.

Click 'Relaunch' to complete the update process when the update has been installed (or if it has been waiting for a few days).

Close the About Google Chrome tab if you'd rather wait to restart Chrome and finish your task. The update will be installed the next time you close and reopen Chrome.

After you've relaunched Chrome and the update has finished installing, go to chrome:/settings/help and double-check that you're using the most recent version of Chrome. If you've already installed the latest updates, Chrome will declare 'Google Chrome is up to date.'
