Google Chrome can automatically update when a new version of the browser is available on your device to ensure you're protected by the latest security patches. You may notice that your browser looks different after these upgrades.

When you close and reopen your computer's browser, updates usually happen in the background. However, if you've not shut your browser for a while, you may notice the following pending update:

  • Open Chrome on your machine.
  • Look at More in the upper right corner.
  • The icon will be colored if an update is pending:
  • Green: A new update was just issued a few days ago.
  • Orange: About 4 days ago, an update was released.
  • Red: It's been at least a week since an update was provided.

To upgradeGoogle Chrome, follow these steps:

  • Open Chromeon your machine.
  • Click the upper right corner.
  • After that, select Help and then Regarding Google Chrome.
  • To update Google Chrome, click the Update button.
  • You're on the most recent version if you can't find this button.
  • Select Relaunch from the drop-down menu.

When you reboot the browser, it saves your open tabs and windows and reopens them automatically. When Chrome resumes, your Incognito windows will not reopen. Click Not now if you don't want to restart right away. The update will be implemented the next time you restart your browser.
