TheInternational Polo Cup, sometimes known as the Newport Cup or the Westchester Cup, is a polo trophyestablished in 1876 and won by teams from the United States and the United Kingdom. The contest has lasted anything from a single game to the best of three games over the years.
The two nations resolved to make the polo matcha yearly event in 1886. Between 1886 and 1939, a total of 12 matches were held between the two nations. The competition was stopped during World War II and did not resume until 1992, due to changing circumstances and interests. Guards Polo Club hosted the most recent match on July 28, 2013.
In 1876, the cup was first presented to Captain John Henry Watson's crew in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1886, the cup was acquired through a subscription and handed to the Westchester Polo Club. It was won by English teams from the Hurlingham Club in 1886 and 1902. This is quite unlikely. From 1874 until 1882, Capt. Watson was a member of the 13th Hussars in India. In 1878, he won the Grand Military Steeplechase of India, according to records. (British Newspapers, March 19, 1878)
The Big Four, which included James Montaudevert Waterbury, Jr., Lawrence Waterbury, Harry Payne Whitney, and Devereaux Milburn, won the cup from the English in 1909. The same team won the cup in 1911 and 1913, while England won it in 1914.
The Westchester Cup was the most anticipated sporting event in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. The United States has won the cup ten times, while England has won it six times, including the first match in 1876. Due to World War II, the event was put on hold in the 1940s and did not resume until the 1990s.
