The**[International Polo Cup](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94187/how-many-players-are-there-in-one-team-of-water-polo)**, sometimes known as the **Newport Cup** or **the Westchester Cup**, is a **[polo trophy](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94187/how-many-players-are-there-in-one-team-of-water-polo)** **established in 1876** and won by teams from the **[United States](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/92993/why-the-united-states-is-the-only-superpower)** and the **United Kingdom**. The contest has lasted anything from a single [game](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/70543/messi-is-the-best-only-for-fans-not-for-the-game-which-made-him) to the best of **three games** over the years.

The **two nations** resolved to make the **[polo match](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94187/how-many-players-are-there-in-one-team-of-water-polo)** a yearly event in **1886**. Between **1886 and 1939**, a total of 12 matches were held between the two nations. The competition was stopped during **World War II** and did not resume until **1992**, due to changing circumstances and interests. **Guards [Polo Club](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94187/how-many-players-are-there-in-one-team-of-water-polo)** hosted the most recent match on **July 28, 2013**.

In **1876**, the cup was first presented to **Captain John Henry Watson's crew in Newport, Rhode Island**. In **1886**, the cup was acquired through a subscription and handed to the **Westchester [Polo Club](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94187/how-many-players-are-there-in-one-team-of-water-polo)**. It was **won by English teams** from the **Hurlingham Club in 1886** and **1902**. This is quite unlikely. From **1874 until 1882, Capt. Watson** was a member of the **13th Hussars in India**. In **1878, he won the Grand Military Steeplechase of India**, according to records. **(British Newspapers, March 19, 1878)**

The **Big Four**, which included **James Montaudevert Waterbury, Jr., Lawrence Waterbury, Harry Payne Whitney**, and **Devereaux Milburn**, won the cup from the **[English](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/93430/can-i-post-any-content-rather-than-english) in 1909**. The same team won the cup in 1911 and 1913, while **England won it in 1914**.\

The **Westchester Cup** was the most anticipated sporting event in the **[United States](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/92993/why-the-united-states-is-the-only-superpower)** in the **1920s and 1930s**. The **United States** has won the cup ten times, while **England** has won it six times, including the **first match** in 1876. Due to **World War II**, the event was put on hold in the 1940s and did not resume until the 1990s.\
