what do you know about heart transplantation and other body parts transplantation?
Heart Transplantation : This is useful to patients who remain symptomatic even after optimum medical therapy. Usual indications are non ischemic Cardiomyopathy and Coronary Artery Disease. It is contraindicated if their life expectancy is less than 2 years due to non cardiac illness, severe lung, kidney and liver diseases infections like AIDS and other multi organ disease. The most important aspect here is to minimise the heart transplantation time to donor site ( maximum 4 Hours).
Lung/Pancreas Transplantation : In our country, the organs like lungs and pancreas are not so commonly transplanted. In cases with more than one organ failure, multiple or dual organ transplantations can be considered, but the success rate is not commendable as very few cases have been tried till date.
Bone Transplantation : Each year lakhs of people in India require bone grafts due to cancer, infection or injury. Though the bone tissues taken from one's body is the best, it may not be enough for reconstruction. For general purposes, residual bones collected from routine surgeries are used. Bone grafts from dead people can serve the purpose.
