Ayushman Bharat Scheme is a National Health Protection Scheme which will cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families and provides the medical coverage of up to 5 lakh rupees per family every year for hospitalization care of secondary and tertiary category. This Mission is a part of the existing scheme which is a centrally sponsored scheme - Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) and the Senior Citizen Health Insurance Scheme (SCHIS). The Scheme is not only benefiting the families which involves the care to their good health whereas the scheme is also giving employment opportunities too. As an expectation total 1 Lakh vacancy of Ayushman Mitra are to be filled under this scheme. And in a single Financial Year, more than 20,000 posts are expected to be filled.

The Central Government has approved the launch of a new Centrally Sponsored 'Ayushman Bharat -National Health Protection Mission (AB- NHPM)' on March 21, 2018. The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi has launched the scheme on April 14, 2018, at Bijapur, Chhattisgarh. The benefit of scheme is transferable across the country and the beneficiary under the scheme is allowed to take cashless benefits from any Public or Private Hospital across the country. To ensure the health of every India, the government didn’t put any limitation over the member of a single family regardless of their age or family members.

The authorities governing the Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission Governing Board is jointly held by the authorities are, Secretary (HFW) and Member (Health), NITI Aayog with Financial Advisor, Additional Secretary and Mission Director, Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission, and Joint Secretary, CEO of Ayushman Bharat will be the Member Secretary, State Secretaries of Health Department can also be the member if the requirement arises.
