April 18 of each year has been celebrated as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, since 1982. UNESCO approved the day during its 22nd General Conference.

When did International Day for Monuments and Sites observe?

Since, then the day is celebrated and promotes cultural heritage, and provides an opportunity to raise awareness of rich diversity, its relevance, as well as how vulnerable it can be and what the needs and benefits of its conservation could be in future. Every year a new theme has been proposed to celebrate the day and follow it forward to the whole year. The 2019 proposed theme of International Day for Monuments and Sites of 2019 was “Rural Landscape”. The theme was related to the theme of the 2019 ICOMOS Scientific Symposium on Rural Heritage which has been taken place in October, 2018 in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The day gives an opportunity to raise awareness about the relevance of rural landscapes, the challenges that arises in the conservation, the benefits which will be given in future with these efforts, and how these rural landscapes are related with the sustainable development of the city and the society. The Organization is devoted for preserving the monuments and all the heritage sites as well as for this, the organization holds workshops and conferences to highlight the importance of conservation of these historical monuments. However, the talks about the role and importance of these monuments and heritage sites in society and education were also included.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is a non-governmental organization that works on preserving and conserving historical and archaeological heritage sites worldwide. The day is fully supported by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Most importantly the day is marked as not only a day to celebrate the National Heritage but also a day of International Solidarity in favour of strengthening and safeguarding Heritage sites world-wide.
