The Union Cabinet decided on January 1, 2015, to establish the National Institution for Transforming India or NITI Aayog.

The Government of India's top strategic consulting firm,
NITI Aayog, provides managerial and strategic suggestions. NITI Aayog provides
technical support to the Centre, States, and Union Territories, developing
long-term projects and initiative for the Indian government.
The Hon'ble
Prime Minister chairs the NITI Aayog Governing Council, which is made up of Chief Ministers of all States and Union Territories with legislatures, as well as Lieutenant Governors of many other Union Territories. The Cabinet Secretariat reestablished the Governing Council with a notice dated February 19, 2021.
The Planning Commission, which was established in 1950, was replaced by
NITI Aayog by the Indian government. This action was taken to consistently framework
