The ACC Asia Cup established in 1983 as the men’s One Day International and Twenty20 international cricket tournament. The Asian Cricket Council founded as a measure to promote goodwill between Asian countries. It was originally scheduled to hold between every two years.
The first Asia cup was held in 1984 in Sharjah in the UAE, India boycotted the 1986 tournament due to strained relations with Sri Lanka. In 1990-91, Pakistan boycotted India due to strained relations with India.
India has won the tournament 7 times and the most successful team in the ODI format of the tournament. Sri Lanka with 5 titles is the second most successful team. India is also the most successful team in the T20 format having won the inaugural version in 2016.
