The first British Presidency of East India Company in India was in “Surat”. The Surat Presidency came into existence in the year 1612 and remained as the Presidency to 1687.

The Surat Presidency came into existence when East India Company founded its first factory in the Western Port city of Surat. Later the Surat Presidency State was moved to Bombay (Mumbai). The East India Company started its business of clothes in Surat first, but the main aim of the company was to expand its market possibilities in Persia as well as in the whole of India.
The East India Company initially started its trade in the field of Silk, Indigo Dye, Cotton, Tea, and Opium. Eventually, the East India Company took control over a large area of the country with its private army. Whereas, officially the East India Company came into existence in India in 1757, which was after the Battle of Buxar and Plassey. Then the rule of British India came into an end in the year 1858 after India’s First War of Independence in 1857. Due to which East India Company dissolved and British took control direct of India which was known as the British Raj.
During the end of the 17th Century, India became a very important country for the trade of East India Company. The cotton weaving was considered the top quality and production was in huge quantity, as it was exported to Britain. Due to this, the Mughal Empire came to an end, and the Raja System came under the guidance of the Britishers. And, it also removed French from India by the year 1763. Till 1764, the East India Company had its huge domination over maximum provinces of India, like Bombay, Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, and a larger part of South India as well. Then, in 1773, the East India Company set up its capital in Kolkata, and ‘Warren Hasting’ has been appointed the first Governor General of India.
