Rooting is the process which allows users of smartphones, tablets and other devices running the Android Operating System to gain access to monitor or modify the various Android subsystems. It can be thought of as the superuser permission in Linux or Administrator permission in Windows.

Generally, it is done to bypass or overtake the various limitations that are set by the carrier or the manufacturer over the device. Post rooting, the users acquire the ability to change or alter the system settings and applications. Rooting also allows the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system usually by a more recent release of the operating system.

A device that has undergone the process of rooting is known as a Rooted device. On the other hand, a device that has not undergone the process is known as unrooted device.

However Rooting when someone tries to root his/her device he/she MUST be careful about the following points:

  • Rooting tampers the device warranty.
  • If the process of rooting goes wrong, the device may get bricked i.e. permanently inoperable
  • Some devices, after rooting become unstable.
  • When the user is getting the root access, along with the user, the rooting application also gets root access.
  • If the user is not cautious, any third party application might also get root access.
