# What is rooted and Unrooted device in Android?

[Rooting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting_(Android)) is the process which allows users of smartphones, tablets and other devices running the [Android](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/34420/android) [Operating System](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/229069/operating-system-development) to gain access to monitor or modify the various Android subsystems. It can be [thought of as](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39521/who-thought-of-as-a-pioneer-of-economic-nationalism) the superuser [permission](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/33390/how-to-enable-api-access-in-salesforce-by-permission-set) in Linux or Administrator permission in Windows.

Generally, it is done to bypass or overtake the various [limitations](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/121/what-are-the-benefits-and-limitations-of-using-hidden-fields) that are set by the carrier or the manufacturer over the device. Post rooting, the users acquire the ability to change or alter the system [settings](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/50729/how-to-use-and-manage-wi-fi-settings-on-your-iphone-8) and applications. Rooting also allows the complete removal and [replacement](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/50857/how-to-get-a-replacement-for-a-bent-iphone-6-or-iphone-6-plus) of the device's operating system usually by a more recent release of the operating system.

A device that has undergone the process of rooting is [known as](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/34771/who-was-known-as-the-whip-of-the-god) a Rooted device. On the other hand, a device that has not undergone the process is known as unrooted device.

However Rooting when someone tries to root his/her device he/she MUST be careful about the following points:

- Rooting tampers the device warranty.
- If the process of rooting goes wrong, the device may get bricked i.e. permanently inoperable
- Some devices, after rooting become unstable.
- When the user is getting the root access, along with the user, the rooting [application](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/33512/how-would-you-print-a-message-in-the-logcat-and-prevent-the-application-to-get-started) also gets root access.
- If the user is not cautious, any third party application might also get root access.
