There are 5 women till now who have made our country proud by winning medals in Olympics. However, Karnam Malleswari was the first women to win an Olympic medal. She won a bronze medal at Sydney Olympics in weightlifting.

Who was the first ever female Olympic medal winner of India?

Born in a small village in Voosavanipeta which is located in Andhra Pradesh, Malleswari started weightlifting from a very young age of 12.

She got training under Neelamshetty Appanna and moved to Delhi with her sister and was very quickly noticed by sports authority of India. After hardworking restlessly for around 4 years in the national camp she became a world champion by winning the finals in 54 kg category.
