There are 5 women till now who have made our country proud by winning medals in Olympics. However, Karnam Malleswari was the first women to win an Olympic medal. She won a bronze medal at Sydney Olympics in weightlifting.

**Born in a small village in Voosavanipeta which is located in Andhra Pradesh, Malleswari started weightlifting from a very young age of 12.**

She **got training under Neelamshetty Appanna** and moved to Delhi with her sister and was very quickly noticed by sports authority of India. After hardworking restlessly for around 4 years in the national camp **she became a world champion by winning the finals in 54 kg category.**\
