The [**Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bharatiya_Janata_Party) is one of two major political parties in India, along with the Indian National Congress. Since it was **founded in 1980**, the BJP has been the principal opposition party in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) and has been a key player in state politics. However, the BJP's rise to power has been accompanied by a number of controversies and criticisms.
