Bus topology, also known as line topology, is a network topology in which all network devices are connected by a single RJ-45 network cable or coaxial cable. **Bus topologies are classified into two types:**

- Topology of a linear bus. All devices are linked by a single cable with two ends.
- Topology of distributed buses All devices are linked by a single cable that splits into several sections, resulting in more than two end points.

**Linear bus topology** is a network topology in which each device connects to the next in a sequential chain . In this case, the bus serves as the network link between the devices. If any link in the network chain fails, all network transmission is terminated.

All nodes in a distributed bus network are connected to a common transmission medium with more than two endpoints, which is created by adding branches to the main section of the transmission medium – the physical distributed bus topology functions exactly the same as the physical linear bus topology because all nodes share a common transmission medium.
