Both switches' hardened specifications ensured stable performance even when used in non-temperature-controlled environments. Two proprietary EtherWAN redundancy protocols were used to keep the network as robust as possible: Alpha-ring and Redundant Pair.

The **alpha-ring [topology](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/145508/what-is-topology-in-computer-network)** is an Ethernet ring topology in which one segment is kept inactive as a backup path. This means that even if a single network failure occurs, security camera footage is not interrupted, keeping the airport safer and more secure. When a ring segment is disconnected or fails, the backup path is activated and connectivity is restored within 15 milliseconds (before any noticeable interruption in the data stream).

The 'Redundant Pair' protocol aids in network stability as it scales to larger and more complex topologies.
