# What is SAN topology?

What is SAN topology?

## Answers

### Answer by Hitesh Vohra

The topology of a **storage area network (SAN)** refers to the arrangement or configuration of SANs. A fibre channel fabric topology, which is an infrastructure specifically designed to manage storage communications, is commonly used in SANs. It provides faster and more reliable access than higher-level protocols used in network-attached storage (NAS).

A fabric is conceptually equivalent to a network segment in a local area network (LAN). A typical fibre channel SAN fabric is made up of several fibre channel switches.

The standard SAN design includes the following elements:

- Edge devices on a network
- Switches in the core of the network
- The cabling that connects them all
- A tiered, core-edge SAN topology is recommended for optimising functionality, administration, and scalability. This strategy provides excellent performance while avoiding unnecessary interconnections.
