- A **power-on self-test (POST)** is a series of processes run by firmware or [**software**](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51476/how-to-fix-an-iphone-se-that-won-t-update-ios-failed-to-update-software) shortly after a computer is turned on to see if the hardware is functioning properly. Only if the requisite hardware is operational will the process continue; otherwise, the BIOS (Basic Input Output Software) will display an error message.
- The system BIOS handles the POST sequence, which is executed regardless of the operating system. When the tests are passed, the POST will usually inform the OS with beeps, albeit the quantity of beeps will vary depending on the system.
- Bootstrapping is activated once POST has completed successfully. The initialization of the operating system begins with bootstrapping.
