- A **system clock,** often known as a system timer, is a constant pulse that assists the [**computer**](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/50257/what-would-you-use-to-connect-two-computers-without-using-switches) clock in keeping time. It keeps track of how many seconds have passed since the epoch and utilises that information to determine the current date and time.
- The following are some of the system clock's characteristics:
- A system clock is used to generate a certain pulse at a predetermined pace.
- A system's machine cycle can be completed in one or more clock pulses.
- A single software instruction for the CPU could be many instructions.
- The instruction set of any central processing unit is a preset set of instructions. These are the commands it can process and comprehend.
