- An eavesdropping assault, also known as a **man-in-the-middle (MITM)** attack, is a deliberate theft of information conducted by a hacker looking to intercept sensitive data. This type of attack usually happens when a computer, smartphone, or other connected device sends information through a hacked network.
- When accessing critical business information, never utilise a public Wi-Fi router directly. Hackers attempting to intercept data love free unsecured networks like those at your neighbourhood coffee shop or library.
- If you have to utilise an insecure network, a [**VPN**](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/97131/why-is-vpn-important-for-network-security) (virtual private network) can help protect and encrypt the data you send and receive.
- Secure web browsers like Chrome and Safari should be updated to the latest versions.
- Keep an eye out for browser warnings indicating a website is insecure.
- Make sure your Wi-Fi networks are protected. On your routers and all linked devices, change the default usernames and passwords to strong, unique passwords.
